q2:All these young thriving women in their 20’s; Saadia Fida, Bilqis yaqoob, Amina Nabbi and Nazira Raza ,resident of Nazimabad,Basho, belong to the group who took EDT (Entrepreneurship Development Training) under EELY project in October 2015 through Kachura Basho LSO (local support organization). What differentiates them from many other EDT participants is their self initiative they took after attending the training. Though they couldn’t win the business award for their submitted business proposal but it did not hamper their spirit to put their acquired knowledge and skill into use. Sharing the experience about EDT, 22 years old young Amina Nabbi shared,” I have no formal education neither I ever participated in such training thus initially I was confused and feeling shy while sitting in training workshop where the trainer was a man. First two days , I did not uttered a single word nor asked any question from the trainer .But trainers friendly mannerism and encouragement helped me overcome my shyness and I felt that my mind started working and comprehending the contents of the training.” Sharing her memories from the training 27 years old Nazira Raza sad,” I remember ‘Dani ki Kahani (Dani’s story) from that training. I can relate to that story where the main character had sown onions without having any knowledge about market demand, storage and transportation information and fixing reasonable price, thus ended up in loss, later seeking advice from another farmer who had first hand information about marketing , helped him avoid past mistakes and earn profits. It gave me idea that not everyone knows everything and pooling of knowledge and skills is also crucial to run a successful enterprise.” Nazira further shared,”I also asked the trainer what brings and bind the customer to which he replied fair dealing and courtesy is a key to retain customer. This touched me and I made a commitment to follow this rule in my business.” 25 years old Bilqis Yaqoob shared his learning,” I never realized the importance of selecting a suitable accessible place for business from customer point of view. I also learnt the significance of developing linkages with different wholesalers that not only can act as producer but can be our potential buyers for local raw material and goods.” She also shared that the whole kachura area is rich in different medicinal plants and herbs. Being a local I can identify and relate their usage and benefits in different minor daily ailments. The training gave me insight into my prospective customer market in Skardu that I can tap through Skardu based whole sellers who deal in herbs. Now whenever I visit Skardu, I sell my collected herbs at Haji sweet shop near main masjid, Skardu and come back with some extra money in my pocket. 29 years old Saadia Fida who couldn’t speak Urdu, communicated her experience thorough her group fellow. Saadaia recalled one significant learning of the training,”During the training, the trainer took us to a local woman’s shop named as’ Lobaan general store’. Our trainer demonstrated how a shop owner probes into a customer’s need , bargain on the price and convince the customer that if she adds a little price adding up to the company price of the item, it covers the transportation cost she paid while bringing the goods to far flung village of Kachura. She also makes them realize that paying a few extra rupees is worth a dime in comparison to the travel cost they have to pay if they directly buy it from Skardu markets.” Saadia also shared, “I also learnt about forecasting and importance of record keeping. Shared these learning with my husband Fida Ali who runs a camping site in Kachura Basho.” When asked about their joint venture, they shared that the idea came from the training itself. When they did not win the award, they thought of pooling their savings and skills and opening a shop ”Geo Dastakari & Ladies Shop” in one spare room of Bilqis’ house. We asked local women about their choice of fabric for any customized apparel for themselves. There was Moharram, month of mourning, fast approaching at thet time so we bought black color fabric and took orders for customized suits for local women and their young kids. We bought fabric in 3000 pkr from Qatalgah market Skardu and stitched about 10 suits and earned some profit from fabric and stitching fee. We invested the income in buying more fabric, embellishment accessories; laces, buttons and some other items. Our initial investment was not much so we are looking forward to take some loan as a group and bring more fabric in bulk that may yield more profit margin and incomes. “This training has helped us look at the things with new perspective and gave us idea that it’s more about making opportunities than finding them.”
